Collin Kiousis was a bright young man who loved sports, music and being with his family and friends. He played soccer and lacrosse for Medina High School, and ran cross country for one season. He was never on the golf team, but enjoyed the game immensely. He also loved building theatre sets and working backstage at the Medina Performing Arts Center, helping MHS Show Choir productions. He played upright string bass in the MHS Orchestra and loved learning how to play the guitar.
Collin was a senior at Medina High School in the fall of 2014 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Even while undergoing many treatments and surgeries, he was still able to graduate with his class and even attend Akron University for one year. He lived by the saying, “Defy the Hand You’re Dealt”, and even had that phrase tattooed on his back left shoulder blade.
During this time, many in the Medina community reached out to help our family. Seeing all of the support we were receiving, Collin decided he wanted to start a foundation that could donate to people who were going through what he was going through. Since late 2016, his 501(c)3 non-profit foundation, Collin Cares Cure Cancer, has donated over $300,000 to hundreds of families dealing with cancer, the majority form NE Ohio.
Events like this Bunker Hill Golf Outing help us raise both money and awareness for Collin’s foundation so we can continue to help others, “Defy the Hand They’re Dealt”.
One person can change the world. Through his courage and dedication, Collin created a foundation to help others.
